BRC is the abbreviation of British Retail Consortium, and Chinese is the British Retail Consortium. The association is composed of famous British retailers such as Asda, Boots, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Iceland, Littlewood’s, Safeway, Waitrose, Somerfield, Co-operative Society, Spar, etc. In 1998, the British Retail Consortium (BRC, British Retail Consortium) initiated and formulated the BRC Food Technical Standard (BRC Food Technical Standard) in response to the needs of industry development to evaluate the manufacturers of retailer’s own-brand food. Soon after the release of this standard, it has attracted the attention of the food industry and other organizations, and has now become a sample of good practices in the food industry.

The wide application of this standard in the UK and even other countries has developed it into an international standard.

Not only food companies need to do BRC certification, but consumer goods companies and food packaging companies also need to do BRC certification.

BRC goal-food safety

In response to recent food panic incidents, such as Salmonella contamination of beef, poultry and eggs infected with mad cow disease, and excessive Listeria in dairy products, BRC (British Retail Industry Association, a British business representing the interests of British retailers) Organization) published the BRC-Global Food Standard, which regulates the minimum hygiene standards of food manufacturing plants.  

The BRC-Global Food Standard is designed for any country that supplies food to British retailers and any food supplier. Compliance with this program is not a legal requirement, but British retailers are very respectful of this standard. In order to comply with this standard, food suppliers/manufacturers must adopt three main standards in their management system: adoption and implementation of HACCP

A documented and effective quality management system   
Factory environmental standards, products, processes and personnel control 

Certification of your food management system in accordance with the BRC-Global Food Standards requirements will bring your company the following benefits:

BRC Global Standard-Consumer Goods

This standard has formulated a set of basic principles for the certification of consumer goods suppliers, with the purpose of assisting retailers in fulfilling their legal obligations and protecting consumers' rights. The "due diligence" obligation that this standard requires retailers to perform refers to the promotion of operational norms in their supply chain.

This standard covers the basic principles for manufacturing safe, legal, and quality-specific products. This standard does not replace any legal and regulatory requirements and higher industry standard requirements.

The technical evaluation of the supplier’s production site is only part of the “due diligence” of the retailer in its supply chain. Whether to accept the supplier’s supply is up to each retailer or customer to decide.

The members of the British Retail Association will review and revise this standard on a regular basis according to the requirements of stakeholders. BRC Global Standard—Consumer Products, this standard requires:

Adopt hazard risk management system and implement appropriate control;

Documented and effective quality management system;

Effectively manage the site, products, processes and personnel;

"BRC Global Standard-Consumer Products" puts forward quality requirements for safe and legal consumer products (see the definition of "quality" in the glossary). These consumer products can be inherent Lv brand products, retailer's own brands, or brands used by other organizations.  
This standard aims to improve the safety, legality and quality of products, rather than covering employee safety and health, environment and ethics.  
The scope of application of "BRC Global Standard-Consumer Goods" covers products within the scope of the "European Union General Product Character Guide" (2005).  
The scope of application of this standard does not include:   
Motor vehicles subject to the management of road traffic and military building use rules   
Fuel sold in bulk or in recycled packaging containers   
Service industry (insurance industry, banking, etc.)   
Prescription drugs   
Vitamins, minerals and herbal additives   
Gardening of plants and flowers   
Live animals and pets   
The scope of application of "BRC/IoP Global Standard-Food Packaging Materials and Other Packaging Materials" covers packaging in contact with food.  
This standard applies to manufacturing, warehousing and distribution before delivery. This standard does not apply to the following activities:   
Wholesale   
Import  
Distribution or storage (outside the direct control of the production site)

Determination of product category

The first category of products: products that have special legal and hygienic requirements, and/or products that may cause serious injury or death if a problem occurs during normal use.  
The second category of products: products that have special legal requirements, and/or products that may cause serious injury or death if a problem occurs during normal use.  
The third category of products: products that have specific legal requirements for products, or products that may cause minor injuries if problems occur during normal use.  
The fourth category of products: products with low risk and no legal requirements specific to the product.  

The product category of the manufacturer and packer is evaluated and determined through the appropriate product category judgment tree.

A company determines whether it is a manufacturer or a packager by looking up the definition of the glossary. When determining the product category, looking up the glossary is better than applying the judgment tree. The British Retail Association website lists a product category table that contains designated product categories. This table is only used as a guide. Companies that require certification must still determine the product category by applying the appropriate product category judgment tree.  
If the company has determined the product category, and the company does not have retail consumers, then the certification body needs to verify the product category when implementing certification. If the company has retail consumers, it is recommended that the product category be verified by consumers before the certification is implemented.

If the relevant party does not agree with the product category, it can be determined by the British Retail Association website. For new products, the product category will be determined and added to the website through the nomination process of the British Retail Association.

If the manufacturer believes that the retailer will accept its determined product category, the risk level of this view is higher.
